Outside Lighting & Power

Electrics in the garden come under the part P law (domestic electrical safety law introduced in 2005 to improve electrical safety in home). This requires that electrics are installed by a competent electrician and are wired to 18th edition wiring regulations. These days’ people like to take their home into the garden and use the garden for entertaining. Consequently there is now an increased demand for garden electrics. You can even have TV’s designed especially for the outdoors and outdoor speakers to help create a relaxing environment.

More commonly now electrical items are being installed outdoors. This increases the risk of electric shock. The risk of electric shock in the garden is higher than in the home, as people often use leads for the equipment which can be cut or damaged. The main dangers are electric lawnmowers, electric hedge cutters, electric strimmers, electric wood chippers, pond electrics, outside lights and electrical power in gardens. We can make sure that your electrical requirements are installed in the garden safely.

Important Considerations For Garden Electrical Installations

  • Always use an RCD (residual current device) protected socket for electrical equipment outside.
  • Make sure electrical equipment is suitable for the environment it’s used for. Don’t use electrics for dry indoor equipment outside, make sure items are designed for outdoors.
  • Make sure extension leads are uncoiled to avoid overheating.
  • Make sure you don’t overload sockets and extension leads by plugging in too many appliances.
  • Be careful in the rain, and make sure if electrics are used outside in wet conditions that they are suitable for wet conditions.
  • Pressure washers and car cleaning equipment should be plugged in to suitable waterproof sockets.

The Importance Of RCD Protection (Residual Current Device)

RCD protection for the electrical equipment outdoors can save lives. If you cut through the lawn mower lead for example, and grass is wet without RCD protection you may not disconnect the fuse, and you may receive an electric shock which could be fatal!!

RCD protection is a safety device that switches off the electricity automatically if there is a fault. All electrical equipment in your garden should be plugged into a socket that has RCD protection, or an adapter that has gives RCD protection, or the sockets from the fuse board should have RCD protection. This is an essential part of electrical safety outdoors, this could save your life or a member of your family’s life!

RCD devices for garden equipment should be checked regularly to make sure that they operate before use. RCD’s built into fuse boards should be checked quarterly to make sure that they operate properly and the mechanisms kept free. If they don’t operate on test, then contact an electrician for advice.

Never by pass RCD’s as they are designed to protect you against faults that could kill you.
Extension leads should be checked before use to make sure that they’re not damaged and also to make sure that they are rated adequately for the equipment.

The reviews don't lie - a proper tradesman doing it right. Whole process from start to finish was brilliant. Phone answered first time with a very helpful person. Quote done over video, great idea. Communication with the business over whatsapp was great. No delays to agreed date and Jamie managed to complete several jobs in one day, leaving the place really tidy and taking all rubbish. Will definitely be returning and recommending - thanks again!

Jamie came to install some fittings in my sons apartment in Barry. Some of them were a different size to the original but Jamie used filler to make good the gaps and painted over the filler so everything looked brand new. Very helpful and would recommend him to family and friends

Great service, I only had a small job but Jamie took the time and suggested an improvement to my plan, so it turned out better than I’d planned. Cleaned and tidied up and even waited for the filler to dry to give it a coat of paint.

Outstanding service, Jamie is a really genuine guy. His quote was VERY reasonable and he treated the job like he would do on his own house. The attention to detail is excellent (hiding cables where he could, upgrading and relocating ugly sockets to more discreet locations in the garden. The equipment was all IP rated for outdoor use (I didn't have to ask this, he told me it's what he uses for similar jobs before I had the chance!). He even helped chop a branch back (nothing to do with the initial job, didn't charge me extra for any of the little things). Genuine guy with bags of experience and knowledge. Will 100% be using him again!

Jamie is a fantastic electrician and the tidiest around! He did a great job rewiring our property inside and out in a week. We have been so thrilled with the results we wish we had more work for him and Nick! We had new sockets, spotlights, wifi points, security alarm, outside lights and sockets, fuse boards. The walls were chased out neatly and filled back in, all mess was cleared at the end of everyday. Would recommend highly!
